Spring in a broken mirror, by: Mario Bendetti

The novel revolves around the arrest of the opposition figure Santiago Rafael after one of the coups that occurred in Uruguay during the seventies of the last century. It is full of life, Santiago who spent five years in prison does not try in his reflections during this period to involve the recipient in political disputes, and he does not indicate his ideological affiliation. The novel ends and we do not know the detailed facts behind his imprisonment, nor does he engage in any dialogue with the other prisoners. His relationships with them belong to a different human space. What connects him to the world behind the bars is a set of messages he sends to his daughter, wife, and father, who live in another neighboring country in Latin America. Number of pages: 280
