Norethisterone 5 mg tablets What are the uses of Norethisterone: Norethisterone contains Norethisterone, which belongs to a group of medicines called progestogen compounds, which are female hormones. Norethisterone can be used in several different conditions: • To treat irregular, painful, or heavy periods • To treat endometriosis (where tissue from the lining of the uterus exists in places where it normally does not) • To treat premenstrual syndrome (also known as premenstrual tension) • To delay periods Do not take Norethisterone: • If you are allergic to Norethisterone or any other ingredients of this medicine • If you have ever had a circulation problem • If you have any symptoms of blood clots • If you have any condition that makes you more prone to blood clots • If you have previously experienced migraines with visual disturbances • If you are suffering from (or recovering from) liver disease • If you have (or have previously had) liver tumors • If you have diabetes with vascular damage • If you have any type of cancer • If you have problems with abnormal reproductive bleeding of unknown cause • If you have a condition called untreated endometrial hyperplasia • If you have hepatitis C • If you experience (or have experienced) during pregnancy: jaundice (pregnancy jaundice of unknown cause) or itching all over the body (pregnancy itching) Precautions and warnings: Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Norethisterone: • If you smoke • If you have diabetes • If you are overweight (BMI over 30 kg/m2) • If you have high blood pressure • If you have heart problems • If you have a clot / blockage • If you have migraines or asthma or kidney problems • If you have epilepsy • If you have inflammation of the veins • If you have varicose veins • If a close family member has breast cancer • If you have previously had a condition called melasma • If you have previously experienced depression • If you or a close family member have previously had high cholesterol or triglyceride levels in the blood • If you have liver or gallbladder disease • If you have some rare medical conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, sickle cell disease, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis • If you have hemolytic-uremic syndrome • If you have a condition that first occurred or worsened during pregnancy or previous use of sex hormones • If you have hereditary angioedema • If you are intolerant to some types of sugar Other medicines and Norethisterone: Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken or might take any other medicines. These include medicines used to treat: • Epilepsy • Tuberculosis • HIV and hepatitis infections • Fungal infections • Bacterial infections • Some heart diseases and high blood pressure • Arthritis and joint inflammation • Pulmonary hypertension • Breathing problems • Muscle pain and/or cramps How to take Norethisterone: Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The number of tablets you need to take and the number of days in the month you need to take them depends on the reason your doctor prescribed Norethisterone. The usual dose is 2-3 tablets daily. For some conditions, Norethisterone should be taken daily, but this is not always the case. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure how many tablets to take, when to take them, or how long to take them. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Possible side effects of Norethisterone: Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Stop taking Norethisterone and speak to your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: • First-time migraine • Severe headache that is unusual or occurs more frequently • Sudden changes in vision, hearing, or speech • Sudden changes in the sense of smell, taste, or touch • Symptoms of blood clots or symptoms of vein inflammation with blood clots: o Unusual pain in your legs o Unusual swelling in your arms or legs o Severe chest pain or sudden shortness of breath o Severe pain or feeling of heaviness or tightness in your chest o Coughing without a clear reason o One side of your body suddenly very weak or numb How to store Norethisterone: • Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children • Store in the original container • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the outer box and on each blister strip after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month • Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer in use.
