Impatinagliflozin 25 mg What is impagliflozin and what are its indications Impagliflozin is a member of a group of medicines called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Why is impagliflozin used Impagliflozin is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adult patients (aged 18 years and above) who cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. Impagliflozin can be used alone in patients who cannot take metformin (another diabetes medication). Impagliflozin can also be used with other medicines to treat diabetes, which may be oral or injectable such as insulin. It is important to continue your diet and exercise plan as advised by your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse. How impagliflozin works Impagliflozin works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in your kidneys. This leads to the removal of blood sugar (glucose) in the urine, thereby reducing the amount of sugar in the blood. This medicine can also help prevent heart diseases. What is type 2 diabetes mellitus Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a disease caused by your genes and lifestyle. If you have type 2 diabetes, your pancreas does not produce enough insulin to control blood glucose levels, and your body cannot use its insulin effectively. This leads to high blood glucose levels, which may cause medical problems such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, and poor circulation in your limbs. Do not use impagliflozin If you are allergic to impagliflozin or any other ingredients of this medicine If you are pregnant or breastfeeding Precautions and warnings Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before taking this medicine and during treatment: If you have type 1 diabetes mellitus If you experience rapid weight loss, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, intense thirst, rapid and deep breathing, confusion, unusual drowsiness or fatigue, sweet-smelling breath, a sweet or metallic taste in your mouth, or a different smell from your urine or sweat, contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately, as these may be signs of diabetic ketoacidosis. The risk of diabetic ketoacidosis may increase with prolonged fasting, excessive alcohol intake, dehydration, sudden reduction in insulin dose, major surgery, or serious illness. If you have severe kidney or liver problems You may be at risk of dehydration in the following cases: If you are ill, have diarrhea or fever If you are unable to eat or drink If you are taking diuretics or blood pressure medicines If you are over 75 years old If you are 85 years or older, you should not start taking impagliflozin If you have severe kidney or urinary tract infection with fever Talk to your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of pain, redness, or swelling in the genital area or between the genitals and anus with fever or general discomfort, as this may be a sign of Fournier's gangrene and requires immediate treatment.
