In contemporary literary studies, the theme/attribute is a central subject addressed by the artistic work. Contemporary critics divide the theme into two categories: the conceptual theme of the work, which is what the audience perceives as "the work revolves around," and the thematic statement, which is "what the work says about the theme." Critics often emphasize distinguishing between the theme/attribute and other elements of artistic structure and architecture. The most common contemporary concept of the theme is that it is the idea or main point of the artistic work, which can be summarized in one word. For example, and not limited to, the theme of a cinematic work could be love, or death, or loneliness... It is also common for an artistic work to contain multiple themes. Themes often explore the most common ideas historically, or those recognizable across different cultures, such as ethical questions and human concerns, and are usually embedded rather than explicitly stated, serving as a support for the targeted theme.
