Common name: Royal paradise flower
Scientific name: Strelitzia reginae
Belongs to the genus of paradise flower from the family of Strelitziaceae. It is considered one of the beautiful flowering bulbs suitable for cutting and remains for a long time before withering. It is a perennial plant that reproduces by rhizomes, native to South Africa.
The inflorescence is terminal, with many flowers and multiple colors, dominated by purple, yellow, and blue. The flower resembles a bird in shape, and the flower stalk length reaches 70-100 cm. The plant reproduces vegetatively by dividing the rhizome or by offshoots carefully separated from the mother plant, usually in March. It is also possible to propagate the plant by seeds if desired, preferably soaking the seeds in a diluted sulfuric acid solution (10%) for half an hour to speed up germination.
The plant prefers light, well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, well-ventilated. The soil is loosened, organic fertilizer is added and mixed into the soil, then the land is irrigated and loosened three times before planting. To care for the planted bulbs, regular watering according to need and good fertilization are essential, as the plant responds well to heavy fertilization, especially during soil preparation. Mineral fertilizer is added in batches: 50 kg of ammonium sulfate, 30 kg of superphosphate, and 10 kg of potassium sulfate per dunam.
The plant's growth requires a temperature of at least 10°C. It can grow in shaded or sunny locations, with the sunnier being preferable. The plant blooms in two main seasons: spring (April and May), with few but high-quality flowers, and autumn (August to November), which is the main flowering season, producing abundant flowers.
