Al-Ghada is a perennial desert plant that stays green all year round, widely cultivated to restore vegetation cover in desert areas. It has a heavy, rough trunk, and thick bark that resembles sponge and is saturated with water. Scientific name: Haloxylon Ammodendron Other names: Black Rhamnus, White Saxeol Family: Qatifia Original habitat: Central Asia and its west, and China's deserts, also widely cultivated in Saudi Arabia in the Qassim region. Flowers: Small yellow flowers of Al-Ghada with no scent. Leaves: Very small, so small that they may not be easily visible. Height: Up to 4 meters. Al-Ghada cultivation and environmental conditions: Al-Ghada adapts to dry desert climates, with high temperatures, and withstands harsh climatic and environmental conditions such as moving and stationary sands and rocky hills, and can live on slopes. It can also be cultivated in moderate climates such as greenhouses. Soil and fertilizer: It lives in light or medium clay sandy soil, acidic, neutral, or alkaline, and can grow in highly alkaline and salty soil. Irrigation method: It tolerates thirst and drought, so it is only irrigated as needed, but during its nursery stages, it requires abundant water. Sun exposure: Al-Ghada needs full sunlight during the day; it cannot grow in the shade. Propagation: By seeds. Planting time: It starts from September (9) to December (12), but can be planted at any time of the year in controlled environments outside these weather conditions, such as in greenhouses. Flowering time: Al-Ghada usually blooms from late summer to autumn. Benefits and uses of Al-Ghada: Al-Ghada trees are used in afforestation, acting as windbreaks and preventing soil erosion. They are also used in making furniture and paper. Additionally, they are used as firewood and fuel due to their hardness, high heat output, and long burning period. Leaves and branches provide food for livestock. A green dye is extracted from them to color wool threads.
