Product description: The active ingredient in this medicine is metformin. Metformin XR extended-release tablets are used to lower blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It helps control glucose levels and improves the body's use of insulin. It is often used with dietary modification and exercise. It may be used for other purposes—ask your doctor or pharmacist if needed. Usage instructions: There is no fixed dosing schedule—the dose is determined based on response and tolerance. The maximum daily dose for adults: 2000 mg. Usually taken once daily with the evening meal. Start with a low dose and gradually increase to reduce stomach upset. Adult doses: Initial dose: 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. Increase by 500 mg weekly until reaching the maximum of 2000 mg daily. If blood sugar control is not achieved: 1000 mg twice daily can be used. At higher doses, the regular formulation of metformin is used up to 2550 mg daily divided. Warnings and precautions: Risk of lactic acidosis: A very rare but serious side effect that can be life-threatening, especially with: impaired kidney function, uncontrolled diabetes, severe inflammation, liver problems, dehydration. Stop the medication and see a doctor immediately if symptoms of lactic acidosis appear: vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, severe fatigue, difficulty breathing, low body temperature or heartbeat. Risk of hypoglycemia: May occur when used with other diabetes medications such as insulin. Symptoms of low blood sugar: weakness, dizziness, sweating, palpitations, vision or concentration disturbances. Blood sugar can be raised by consuming something sweet. Possible side effects: Lactic acidosis (very rare). Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, taste changes. Other medications and Metformin XR: Tell your doctor if you are taking: diuretics, NSAIDs, blood pressure medications, asthma medications (Beta-2 agonists), corticosteroids, any other diabetes medications.
