Product description: Solifenacin succinate 10 mg coated tablets (Vesicare) used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder. Solifenacin belongs to the anticholinergic group, and works by reducing excessive bladder activity, helping to decrease sudden urges to urinate, reduce the frequency of urination, and improve bladder control. The medication helps the patient wait longer before going to the bathroom and increases the amount of urine the bladder can hold. Symptoms of overactive bladder include: sudden strong urge to urinate, frequent urination, urine leakage or inability to reach the bathroom in time. Do not use solifenacin if you: are allergic to solifenacin or any of the ingredients, are unable to completely empty the bladder (urinary retention), have severe stomach or intestinal problems including toxic megacolon, suffer from severe myasthenia gravis, have or are at risk of glaucoma (increased eye pressure), are undergoing dialysis, have severe liver disease, have severe kidney disease or moderate liver disease and are taking medications that reduce the breakdown of solifenacin (such as ketoconazole). Warnings and precautions: Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using solifenacin if you: have difficulty emptying the bladder or weak urine flow, have a bowel obstruction or chronic constipation, are at risk of slow stomach or intestinal movement, have severe kidney disease or moderate liver disease, are taking CYP3A4 inhibitors (like ketoconazole), have a hiatal hernia or acid reflux or are taking medications that may irritate the esophagus, have neurological disorders (such as autonomic neuropathy), have arrhythmias or low potassium levels in the blood. Possible side effects: Stop the medication and seek medical care immediately if you experience: swelling of the face, eyes, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath or throat, severe rash or itching or feeling faint. Drug interactions: Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications you are taking, especially: other anticholinergic drugs (such as atropine, oxybutynin), cholinergic drugs (such as bethanechol), gastrointestinal motility accelerators (such as metoclopramide), drugs that reduce the breakdown of solifenacin like ketoconazole, ritonavir, verapamil, drugs that increase the breakdown of the medication like rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine. How to use: Usual dose: 5 mg once daily. The doctor may decide to increase the dose to 10 mg daily depending on the condition. The medication is taken orally with or without food.
