Product description
Losartan 50 mg coated tablets
What is losartan and what are its indications for use?
Losartan belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists.
Losartan is used for:
• Treating hypertension in adults, children, and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years.
• Protecting the kidneys of patients with type 2 diabetes who have high blood pressure with laboratory evidence of impaired kidney function and proteinuria 0.5 grams per day (a condition where urine contains an abnormal amount of protein).
• Treating patients with chronic heart failure when the doctor considers treatment with certain drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors, drugs used to lower high blood pressure) inappropriate. If your heart failure has been stabilized with ACE inhibitors, you should not switch to losartan.
• For patients with high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy, Cozaar has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke.
Do not take losartan:
• If you are allergic to losartan or any other component of this medicine,
• If you are more than 3 months pregnant (it is also better to avoid losartan at the beginning of pregnancy),
• If you have severe liver impairment,
• If you have diabetes or kidney dysfunction and are being treated with a blood pressure-lowering medicine containing aliskiren.
Precautions and warnings:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking losartan:
• If you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat, and/or tongue),
• If you experience excessive vomiting or diarrhea leading to significant fluid and/or salt loss in your body,
• If you are taking diuretics (medications that increase water excretion by the kidneys) or if you are on a salt-restricted diet causing significant fluid and salt loss,
• If you are known to have narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels leading to your kidneys or if you have recently had a kidney transplant,
• If you have liver impairment,
• If you have heart failure with or without kidney failure or serious arrhythmias threatening life,
• If you have coronary heart disease or cerebrovascular disease,
• If you have primary aldosteronism,
• If you are taking any of the following medications used to treat high blood pressure: ACE inhibitors, aliskiren.
Possible side effects of losartan:
• Dizziness,
• Low blood pressure,
• Orthostatic effects related to dose such as low blood pressure when rising from a lying position,
• Fatigue,
• Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar),
• Increased potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia),
• Changes in kidney function including renal failure,
• Increased blood urea, serum creatinine, and potassium in patients with heart failure.
Other medications and losartan:
Pay special attention if you are taking the following medications during losartan treatment:
• Other blood pressure-lowering medicines as they may reduce blood pressure,
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as indomethacin, including Cox-2 inhibitors.
How to take losartan:
Adults with hypertension:
Treatment usually starts with 50 mg losartan (one 50 mg losartan tablet) once daily. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is reached after 3-6 weeks of starting treatment. In some patients, the dose may later be increased to 100 mg losartan (two 50 mg losartan tablets) once daily.
Children and adolescents:
Children under 6 years:
Losartan is not recommended for children under 6 years, as its effectiveness has not been established in this age group.
Children aged 6 to 18 years:
The recommended starting dose for patients weighing between 20 and 50 kg is 0.7 mg of losartan per kilogram of body weight, given once daily. The doctor may increase the dose if blood pressure is not controlled.
Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Try to take your daily dose at about the same time each day. It is important to continue taking losartan until your doctor tells you otherwise.
How to store losartan:
Keep this medicine out of the reach and sight of children.
