What is Linagliptin and its indications for use: Linagliptin belongs to a group of medicines called "oral antidiabetic drugs." Oral antidiabetics are used to treat high blood sugar levels. They work by helping the body reduce blood sugar levels. Linagliptin is used for type 2 diabetes in adults, if the disease cannot be sufficiently controlled with a single oral antidiabetic drug (metformin or sulfonylurea) or diet and exercise alone. Linagliptin can be used with other antidiabetic medicines such as metformin, sulfonylurea (like glimepiride, glipizide), empagliflozin, or insulin. Some patients have experienced skin rash, urticaria, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat, which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing (angioedema). Some patients have experienced pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) while taking Linagliptin alone or with other diabetic medicines. Some patients experienced the following side effects while taking Linagliptin alone or with other diabetic medicines: • Common: Elevated blood lipase levels. • Uncommon: Rhinitis or sore throat (pharyngitis), cough, constipation (combined with insulin), elevated amylase levels in the blood. • Rare: Skin ulcers (pemphigus-like). Other medicines and Linagliptin: In particular, you should tell your doctor if you are using medicines containing any of the following active substances: • Carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or phenytoin. These can be used to control seizures or chronic pain. • Rifampicin. An antibiotic used to treat infections like tuberculosis. How to take Linagliptin: You can take Linagliptin with or without food.
