Capsule tablets Why is Captopril used and what is its use? Captopril is used to treat: High blood pressure Heart failure (weak heart) Kidney problems caused by diabetes Improving survival chances after a heart attack Do not take Captopril if you have an allergy to the active ingredients or to other ACE inhibitors or any components of this medicine. If you have ever had a very severe allergic reaction involving swelling of the hands, face, lips, or tongue, and the cause is unknown. If you have diabetes or kidney dysfunction and are treated with blood pressure-lowering medicines (Aldosterone antagonists). If you are more than 3 months pregnant. Precautions and warnings Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, especially if you: Have liver problems Have kidney problems or are on dialysis Have heart problems, especially heart valve issues Are taking medicines that suppress the immune system Have recently experienced severe diarrhea or vomiting Have diabetes Have rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or scleroderma Are taking ACE inhibitors or Aldosterone antagonists Possible side effects Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if you experience: Skin rash Itching Red, ulcerated, or peeling skin Chest tightness or throat Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking Unusual hoarseness Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat The frequency of these side effects is unknown. Serious side effects Angioedema: swelling of the hands, face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): Dizziness Skin rash Other medicines and Captopril Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking, especially if you use: Other ACE inhibitors Blood pressure medicines Aldosterone antagonists Diuretics (water pills) Potassium supplements Lithium Immunosuppressants Gout medicines Arrhythmia medicines Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) How to take Captopril Take the medicine as instructed by your doctor. Take it at the same time every day. It can be taken with or without food. Standard dose: From 6.25 to 25 mg 2–3 times daily Your doctor may gradually increase the dose up to a maximum of 150 mg per day. How to store Captopril Store at room temperature below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date. Do not dispose of the medicine in sewage or household waste.
