What is itraconazole and what is it used for: It is an azole antifungal, mainly used to treat fungal infections of the nails. Additionally, itraconazole is used to treat the following fungal infections when it is believed that they are likely to be sensitive: vulvovaginal candidiasis. Oral candidiasis. Do not take itraconazole: hypersensitivity to itraconazole; if you have heart problems (congestive heart issues). Warnings and precautions: Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking itraconazole to monitor: if you have a history of heart problems; if you have liver problems; if you know you have low stomach acid. Capsules and oral solution should not be used interchangeably. Possible side effects: headache; fatigue; nausea. Other medications and itraconazole: inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Do not use these medications while taking itraconazole due to increased toxicity: cisapride, midazolam, nisoldipine, felodipine, pimozide, quinidine, dofetilide, triazolam, methadone, and levacetylmethadone. Do not take lovastatin or simvastatin or any HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) with itraconazole. Do not take ergot alkaloids metabolized by CYP3A4 such as dihydroergotamine, ergometrine (ergonovine), ergotamine, and methyl ergometrine (methylergonovine) with itraconazole. How to take itraconazole: Adults over 18 years: the usual dose for fungal nail infections only: 2 treatment courses, each consisting of 200 mg (2 capsules) twice daily (400 mg/day) for one week. There is a 3-week break without itraconazole. How to take itraconazole: capsules should be taken after a full meal, separate from antacids or gastric acid reducers. It can be taken at any time of the day. Do not break the capsule into halves. How to store itraconazole: keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children.
