Benefits of cinnamon drink Anti-inflammatory: as studies indicated the importance of cinnamon in helping to fight infection, repair damaged tissues, which gives it anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to its antioxidants which enhance these properties. Rich source of antioxidants: such as polyphenols; which protect the body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals, and a study conducted on 26 types of spices; to compare their antioxidant effectiveness, and cinnamon was the most effective type compared to garlic and oregano, making it a natural preservative. Reducing neurological diseases: as cinnamon enhances brain cell functions; and this is due to cinnamon containing compounds that inhibit the accumulation of tau protein in the brain; which is characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. It is worth noting that Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease; or what is known as tremor paralysis, are among the most common neurodegenerative diseases, but more human studies are still needed to determine how cinnamon affects nerve cells. Fighting bacterial and fungal infections: as cinnamon contains an active substance called cinnamaldehyde; which may help combat various types of infections, and limit the growth of some bacteria, such as Listeria and Salmonella. Additionally, this spice may help prevent tooth decay and reduce bad breath. It has also been shown that cinnamon oil is effective in treating respiratory infections caused by fungi, but studies have not indicated cinnamon’s effectiveness in reducing infections in other parts of the body. Cancer prevention: as laboratory and animal studies indicated that cinnamon extracts may prevent cancer; by reducing the growth of cancer cells, and they are considered toxic to these cells; leading to their death. Cinnamon also reduces the formation of blood vessels in tumors, but confirming these results still requires further studies. HIV/AIDS fighting: as a laboratory study involving 69 medicinal plants found that cinnamon is the most effective in treating infected cells with this virus, and it is believed that Chinese cinnamon extracts help combat one of the most common types of HIV, called HIV-1. However, more human studies are still needed. Helping to treat diabetes: according to the results of a study that included 16 laboratory and animal studies, cinnamon stimulates insulin production and increases its effectiveness, and it also treats metabolic disorders leading to insulin resistance. It was also found to reduce weight and lower bad cholesterol levels, among other positive effects. However, confirming the safety and efficacy of its therapeutic uses requires clinical studies. Treating some skin problems: a small study found that Ceylon cinnamon specifically can fight bacteria that cause acne, and another small laboratory study indicated it may stimulate collagen production, which could help make the skin look younger. It should be noted that there is no evidence supporting the effectiveness of most common cinnamon mixture recipes claimed to benefit the skin. Regulating blood pressure: a review article of three studies published in 2012 showed that cinnamon led to a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in people with type 2 diabetes and early stages of diabetes. However, another study conducted on people with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, who were given a product made of cinnamon, calcium, and zinc, showed no decrease in blood pressure. Therefore, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health advises against using cinnamon for therapeutic purposes. More research is also necessary before recommending its use for blood pressure control. Reducing menstrual pain in women: studies have proven the effectiveness of cinnamon in reducing pain and symptoms associated with dysmenorrhea; such as vomiting, nausea, and bleeding. It is also worth noting that its consumption is considered safe and does not cause side effects.
