About the book The Merchant of Venice: "The Merchant of Venice" is a famous play by the writer William Shakespeare, set in the city of Venice in Italy. The play tells about a merchant named Antonio who borrows money from the Jewish usurer Shylock to help his close friend Bassanio win his beloved Portia, who is a wealthy heiress. Shylock conditions Antonio, if he does not repay the debt on time, to take a pound of his flesh. The events escalate when Antonio fails to repay the loan on time, and Shylock demands to fulfill his condition. The conflict ends with a court where Portia (disguised as a lawyer) dismantles Shylock's legal arguments, to see if she will outsmart him and save Antonio, or if Shylock will indeed take a pound of his flesh?
