Love is that weapon that sometimes destroys our hopes, and perhaps our lives. This is the main theme of the novel, which revolves around Wafa "Stephen" and his beloved "Magdalene," who did not hesitate much to sell him for money; she married his friend "Edouard," who shared his food and shelter. The situation changes and time takes revenge; Edouard loses his wealth and commits suicide, leaving his wife poor and in debt, while "Stephen" inherits a large fortune. Magdalene feels guilty; she goes to her former lover, announcing her regret and repentance, but his dignity rises above his love; he refuses her repentance, but helps her overcome her financial crisis. Magdalene could not bear life and commits suicide, and "Stephen" realizes that his heart still beats with her love, so he departs life without regret. His last wish was to be buried beside his beloved; as if telling fate that if it refuses to unite us in life with our bodies, then we are united in our souls.
