About the book In 1862, Dostoevsky took his first trip abroad. He passed through Germany and arrived in Paris, where he stayed only ten days, then traveled to London for two weeks, then returned to Paris for another two weeks, then left it for Geneva passing through the city of Bâle. In Geneva, he met his friend Nikolai Strakhov, and the two friends visited Italy together. Strakhov later wrote: "Neither nature nor buildings nor works of art concerned him; rather, his entire attention was directed to people." This great explorer into the depths of souls directed all his attention to people in the streets, in theaters, and in cafes. He tries to understand the psychology of each nation during this brief trip that lasted about two months. When Dostoevsky published these "memories," he spoke little about his journey, but he used this trip to present his opinions on the history of Russia and its situation, and to mock the countries he passed through, mocking Germany, England, and especially France, where he begins by a sentence said by Von Ferin, which is that "the Frenchman is deprived of reason, and if he had reason, he would consider it the greatest misfortune that befalls him." He then does not mention Italy or Switzerland with praise or blame.
