The events of the novel take place in an imaginary world divided into three superdictatorial countries: Oceanía, Eurasia, and Eastasia, and three regions of constant conflict: India, Africa, and the Middle East. The great state is controlled by the English Socialist Party, and its most prominent figure is called (Big Brother), a mysterious character but one who dominates all parts of the state, especially the party that obeys his orders and spreads frightening slogans among the people such as: (Big Brother is watching you, War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength, Who controls the past controls the future). The ministries affiliated with this party consisted of four ministries; the Ministry of Truth for falsifying history, distorting articles of modern foreign newspapers, and fabricating news; the Ministry of Love which tortures people, appoints them as spies on each other, and completely forbids sexual relations; the Ministry of Peace which is responsible for waging wars; and the fourth Ministry is the Ministry of Plenty, which regulates and limits food supplies and starves the population.
