Overview of the Diwan of Majnun Layla, new edition with illustrations: In this book, “Adnan Zaki Darwish” discusses and studies the well-known “Diwan of Majnun Layla.” The book is divided into two sections; the first section is a translation of the poet Qays ibn al-Mulawwah or Majnun Layla and the era and the political and social environment in which the poet lived (the Umayyad era). After that, the author addresses the characteristics of the love poetry and the customs of Bedouin life; and the story of Majnun’s love for Layla as it appears in the Kitab al-Aghani by Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani, in the classes of poets by Ibn al-Mu’tazz, in the issues of sights by al-Umari, and in “Tazyeen al-Aswaaq fi Akhbar al-‘Ashaaq” by Dawood al-Anṭaki. The second section of the book is dedicated to the Diwan, and its poems are organized according to the meters of Arabic poetry, rhymed and measured, and arranged alphabetically starting from (the Qaf of Hamza) and ending with (the Ya of Ya). It includes explanations of words and meanings. The Diwan concludes with narrations found in (“The News of Majnun ‘Aamir and His Lineage”) as well as in his poetry and his story with ‘Umar ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Awf and others, along with a technical study of his poetry by more than one narrator and historian. From fragments of Majnun Layla, we read under the title “Layla the Sick”: They say Layla is sick in Iraq, so why are you not exhausted and you are a friend? May Allah heal the sick in Iraq, for I, over all the sick in Iraq, am compassionate. If you are sick in Iraq, I am drowning in the sea of rights. I wander across the lands and their expanse, and I have no way to Layla at dawn…”.
