Brief about Duwyan Mihlal ibn Rabi'ah: Mihlal is Uday ibn Rabi'ah ibn Al-Harith and is nicknamed Abu Layla, and he is the maternal uncle of the well-known poet Imru' al-Qais, and the grandfather of the poet Amr ibn Kulthum, the lord of Banu Tawglib. Uday was known by two nicknames: Al-Zeer and Mihlal. The two nicknames overshadowed his name, so he became known only as "Al-Zeer Abu Layla Al-Mihlal." His life and poetry are divided into two stages. The first stage: before the killing of his brother Kulaib, and his poetry was limited during this stage, as he only composed one or two verses in love poetry. The second stage: after the killing of his brother Kulaib, which is the longer and more important phase in Mihlal's life. The killing of Kulaib sparked a long war between Tawglib and Bakr, known as the War of Al-Basus, which is one of the most famous wars in history, lasting forty years, and Mihlal was its hero. Most of Mihlal's poetry was in mourning for his brother Kulaib, including threats and warnings directed at his killers, and sometimes verses of love poetry, especially when Mihlal reminisced about his past days, characterized by sadness and simplicity. We have in front of us the Diwan of Mihlal ibn Rabi'ah, collected by researcher Talal Harb, who gathered his poems and verses from old literary books and collections, and worked on authenticating and explaining the obscure words and expressions so that Arab readers can benefit from them.
