The novel revolves around a love story between Hala Al-Wafi and a very wealthy Lebanese businessman. When he saw her for the first time by chance on the television screen she was wearing her elegant black dress. When the presenter asked her how long she would be in mourning, she replied that mourning is not in what we wear but in our view of things. The man was greatly impressed by her language. He was attracted to her by that black dress which made her more beautiful, but luck was not on his side to know anything about her. On his flight to Paris, he saw her picture in the newspaper and learned her name was Hala Al-Wafi. In her next appearance on television, it was on Valentine's Day, and she did not take off her black dress for this occasion nor did she wear red like others. He sent her a bouquet of black tulips accompanied by a card that read: Black suits you.
