Publisher: Arab Publishing Foundation Author: Saad Al-Otaiq Language: Arabic Pages: 99 Synopsis: The short story collection "Empty Cups" by writer Saad Al-Otaiq is an artistic and aesthetic adventure at the same time, whether on the literary or life level. The reader of the text finds himself facing a transformation of the character, a psychological and semantic shift from a state of submission to a state of rejection. This intertwined structure in the composition of the text is expressed in a narrative scene that refers to the world of work and the attempt to exploit the working woman as a female, which calls for a re-reading of that scene "... In the last necessities, I summoned her to your office, so she came to you and I was, of course, with her as usual, and the institution's leg came, so I ordered him to bring us two glasses of drink without asking us about our desire for it, and suddenly, she warned you raising her right hand, and with her left hand, she pointed to me to leave... I held her hand, and we went away without return... We left dirty places and empty glasses." From this model, the writer highlights other life scenes, taking on the role of the omniscient narrator, who has no role in what happens; he narrates and sees the characters from outside, after the incidents occur, which makes the statement that mimics reality understandable. Through the sequence of the text, it leads to coherence that links the beginning and end of each story, transitioning from one state to another, explaining through which his characters undertake certain behaviors. His characters are both the subject and the self at the same time. The book includes very short stories under the following titles: "Travel Obsession," "A Step Back," "Sofa Rumor," "Young Girls," "Conversation on the Balcony," "Empty Cups," "Dust of the Pavement," "Screech," "Beggars," (...) and other stories.
