Why use Clarithromycin Clarithromycin is used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria sensitive to clarithromycin. Do not take clarithromycin if you are allergic to the active ingredients or to the macrolide group or any other components of this medicine. If you are taking any of the following: cispred, bimoside, astemizole, terfenadine, ergotamine or dihydroergotamine, lomitapide, simvastatin or lovastatin. If you are taking colchicine and have kidney or liver diseases. If you have an irregular heartbeat called long QT intervals. Precautions and warnings Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including if you have: liver and/or kidney diseases. If you have any heart problems. If you have low levels of potassium and magnesium. Use longer than the instructions mentioned is prohibited. A secondary infection may occur. This medicine may worsen symptoms of myasthenia gravis. Possible side effects Stop using this product and seek medical care immediately if you develop a rash; itching; red or ulcerated or peeling skin; chest or throat tightness; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency of these side effects is unknown. Common side effects: Nausea. Diarrhea. Change in taste ability. Stomach upset. Headache. Changes in liver function. Rash (in children). Other medicines and clarithromycin Clarithromycin interacts with many drugs. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking. How to take clarithromycin Take Clacid 250 as directed by your doctor. Take extended-release tablets with food. Swallow the 250 mg extended-release Clacid whole. Do not chew, break, or crush. Doses may vary depending on the site and severity of the infection. The usual dose is 500 mg every 12 hours. This equals 1 gram of extended-release tablet once daily. For children, doses are based on the child's weight in mg/kg/day. The usual dose is 15-20 mg/kg/day. How to store clarithromycin Store at room temperature from 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 25 degrees Celsius). Keep away from light. Keep this medicine out of reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiration date printed on the package.
