- Bloating in infants:
- Infants and newborns have more opportunities to swallow air during feeding and daily life. Examples of this include:
- Breastfeeding, including breastfeeding or formula feeding.
- Infants also use pacifiers to cause them to swallow air.
- Even crying can cause air swallowing.
- When air gets trapped in your baby's digestive system, he or she may feel bloated, uncomfortable, and cry.
- Tips to make your baby feel comfortable and reduce gas retention:
- Baby's body position during breastfeeding: Whether your baby is breastfed or bottle-fed, in both cases, his head should be higher than his stomach so that the milk goes down to the bottom of the stomach and the air comes out to the top (preferably at a 45° angle).
- The traditional 'burp your baby' method: After breastfeeding your baby, try to burp him by placing him on your shoulder and gently slapping him on the upper back to release the excess air that was introduced during breastfeeding.
- Replace your bottle: In two cases, if the nipple flow is slow, or the nipple is not wide enough to close and cover your baby's mouth and prevent air from entering during feeding.
- Use nonprescription medications: There are some medications that absorb gas from your baby's intestines without causing any harm. You can give them to your baby under the supervision of a doctor or pharmacist.
