Tips for preventing bedsores in the elderly:

Bedsores occur in the elderly as a result of the skin being exposed to constant pressure between the mattress and the bones, which results in reduced blood flow to the skin, and also as a result of lying down for long periods, which results in poor ventilation of the skin. Therefore, bedsores can be prevented by the following points:

- Continuously change positions, every two hours if the patient spends most of his time in bed, and every 15 minutes if the patient is inactive or confined to a wheelchair.

- Lying on your side at a 30-degree angle.

- Use special beds and mattresses to reduce pressure on the skin.

- Do not place pillows under the knees, as this reduces blood flow to the feet.

- Use foam or gel pillows that reduce pressure on the skin, but they do not replace the need to constantly change positions.

- Daily skin examination by the patient or a family member, focusing on areas exposed to pressure.

- If you notice a change in skin color, such as redness, you should relieve pressure on this area, clean it well, and apply a rash protection cream.

- If a foul odor, hardness of the skin, or heat appears in the affected area, a specialist doctor must be consulted to prescribe the appropriate treatment.

- Paying attention to the patient’s healthy nutrition, because in most cases, whether the patient is elderly or in the recovery phase, he suffers from poor appetite and lack of desire for food. Therefore, attention must be paid to the patient’s necessary nutrition during that period.

- If the patient has diabetes, intensive care and continuous follow-up with the attending physician must be provided.

- Continuous massage of areas exposed to pressure.
