Why is hydrochlorothiazide used?

Hydrochlorothiazide is used:

To treat high blood pressure.

To treat water retention in the body.

Do not take hydrochlorothiazide.

If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

If you are unable to urinate.

If you are taking lithium.

Warnings and precautions

Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including:

If you are allergic to sulfonamide or sulfonylurea antibiotics.

If you have kidney problems.

If you have liver problems.

If you have heart problems.

If you have diabetes.

If you have low blood pressure.

If you are dehydrated.

If you have abnormal levels of electrolytes in your blood.

If you have glaucoma.

If you have gout.

If you have an autoimmune disease called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Possible side effects

Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is not known.

Serious side effects:

Serious changes in electrolyte levels

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take.

Hydrochlorothiazide interacts with the following drugs:

lithium

Digoxin

Other medications used to lower blood pressure

Medications that affect blood potassium levels

Medications used to treat diabetes

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

steroids

Cholestyramine and colestipol (for cholesterol)

How to take hydrochlorothiazide

This property is intended for adults.

Take this medicine as directed by your doctor.

If you take this medicine once a day, take it in the morning.

For the treatment of water retention: The usual starting dose is 25–100 mg daily, divided into two doses. Your doctor will adjust your dose based on your response (up to a maximum of 200 mg/day).

For the treatment of high blood pressure: The usual dose is 12.5 - 25 mg once daily (maximum 50 mg/day).

How to store hydrochlorothiazide

Store at room temperature 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C).

Store away from sunlight.

Keep this medicine out of reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton.
