Category 6 (Cat6) cable is a standard twisted-pair cable for Ethernet networks and other network physical layers. It is backward-compatible with Category 5, 5e, and 3 cabling standards.

Compared with Cat5 and Cat5e, Cat6 must meet stricter specifications for crosstalk and system noise. The cable standard defines performance up to 250 MHz, compared with 100 MHz for Cat5 and Cat5e.

When used for 10GBASE-T, Cat6 has a reduced maximum length of up to 55 meters. Cat6A supports frequencies up to 500 MHz and has improved crosstalk performance, allowing 10GBASE-T operation over the same 100-meter maximum distance used by earlier Ethernet variants.
