It is necessary to introduce the narrator with these details of his life to understand the ignorance surrounding his origins, the chaos governing his childhood, and the forgetfulness that consumed entire parts of his history. Because of this struggle with memory, the young narrator cannot establish a chronological sequence of events in the novel. However, the night incident he experienced served as the timeline that divided his life into before and after the event.
