"Every person is polluted in this life, and whoever lifts the curtain will see a wonder."
Is there a greater success than to immortalize characters of a literary work to become proverbial through ages?
Mr. Ahmed Abdul Jawad (Sayyid Al-Sayyid), a strict father to whom wife Amina is confined at home, and he dominates his five children: Yasin, Fahmy, Kamal, Khadija, and Aisha.
In Egypt, which was created by the 1919 Revolution, the events of the novel "Between the Two Palaces" unfold through the story of a middle-class family living in a popular neighborhood near the Mosque of Sayedna Al-Hussein, the grandson of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
"Beauty is like a mirage; it can only be seen from afar."
The novel was first published in 1956, and it is the first work after the 1952 Revolution, which established a different reality from that imposed by the 1919 Revolution — the moment from which the events of the novel begin. It is distinguished by highly skillful internal dialogue; it is a very precise artistic painting that explains human nature and contradictions, as well as the impact of customs and traditions on our lives.
"Between the Two Palaces" is the first part of Naguib Mahfouz’s trilogy, and it is considered one of the most important works of the Egyptian Nobel laureate.
However, "Between the Two Palaces" is the old name of Al-Muizz Street in Cairo, and the two palaces in the middle of the street were built by Jawhar al-Siqilli. One was an eastern palace for the Caliph "Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah Al-Fatimi," and the other for "Al-Aziz Billah Nizar bin Al-Muizz." Their landmarks disappeared before the time of the novel.
"We deny ourselves with age."
Cinema was inspired by the novel "Between the Two Palaces" to produce a film of the same name, directed by Hassan Imam in 1964, starring Yahya Shahin, Amal Zayed, Salah Qabil, and Abdel Moneim Ibrahim.
