When it comes to coffee cooperatives, no one rivals Costa Rica in establishing and managing excellent and successful cooperatives, and Dota Farmers Cooperative Society is one of the most distinguished integrated cooperatives. It was founded in 1960 and now has about 900 members.
The society is characterized by its unlimited support for the environment, having obtained a carbon-neutral certificate, the first of its kind in coffee processing. Some of its equipment is powered by water energy, and drying machines operate on natural fuel from the coffee husks remaining from previous batches. It also uses peeling equipment that reduces energy and water consumption.
Members dedicate their full attention to managing the farm year-round, and during harvest, they deliver coffee cherries to the processing center, which applies the best quality standards in sorting, cleaning, drying, and peeling the coffee.
This crop is processed naturally under the sun and also with drying machines, demonstrating the society’s commitment to reducing water consumption and precisely applying natural processing protocols.
One of the society’s pillars is supporting the economic sustainability of its members by providing various job opportunities. The farm owns its own roastery, operates 3 cafes, and a barista training center, contributing to the farmers’ passion for quality production.
