Product description
Philosophy generates increasing interest, and perhaps hope, in providing meaning to our existence, in a world crisis where the logic of competition spreads blindly. The desire to escape this feeling of losing our destiny from our hands grows as traditional ideals and great narratives (spiritual, religious, national, or revolutionary) that were once inspired to guide our lives have widely lost their persuasive power regarding a reality that no longer has much influence over them. We have no choice but to seek a way to survive, unless we are content with a kind of anger tinged with nostalgia, which makes life seem worth living and clinging to despite knowing its brevity and end. And what also makes us willing to die with passion for ideals or beliefs? In the context of seeking answers, interest in philosophical thought re-emerges. What is philosophy? What do we expect from it? Do we still need it? How can it help us in an age where human dignity seems subordinate to the expanding dominance of technological innovations? But scientific discoveries, political reforms, and technical innovations, no matter how fruitful, do not tell us what kind of truth we can reach, nor do they strengthen or legitimize our moral values. They do not quench our thirst for an answer to our questions about what life should be like, a good life for us, mortal humans, a life capable of saving our existence from the triviality that threatens us. The answer to this challenge through purely human means provided by rational thinking is precisely the subject of philosophy’s utmost concern.
