The Norwegian novelist Knut Hamsun (1859-1952), who won the Nobel Prize in 1920, occupies an important position in Norwegian and world literature. His novel "Paan" was published in 1894, after years of publishing his famous novel "Hunger" in 1890. Hamsun began writing the novel "Paan" in Paris, then moved to Copenhagen and spent months there, completing it in Norway. The novel is considered one of Hamsun's important literary works, which attracted the attention of critics. The well-known Norwegian critic Nordahl Grieg wrote: "The novel 'Paan,' published in 1894, is an literary victory for Knut Hamsun, as it is a major and pioneering work of his youth. Thousands of readers' minds were ignited by the story of Lieutenant Glyn and his women: Edvarda the dark, magnificent, who became his fate, and Eeva the faithful, whose destiny was collapse. Knut Hamsun tells about love in a way we have never heard before, making Nordland a kingdom of dreams. As for the chapter about the three nights, it was like natural gospels to us, painful and enjoyable to read in a room." The theme of the modern human being — his psychological world and internal contradictions, as he faces his present existence — occupies a central place in this novel as in his other works. He distances himself from the realistic pedagogical style that characterized the previous generation of Norwegian writers like Ibsen, Kjeland, and others, and thus we see him attacking them on more than one occasion and forum, demanding non-pedagogical or realistic literature, which is clearly reflected in the novel "Paan." Hamsun drew many stylistic and aesthetic elements in his literature from Strindberg, Ibsen, Nietzsche, and Dostoevsky, although he sometimes denied the influence of Strindberg on his work. That influence was evident in his novel, literary perceptions, and artistic style, especially in his deep descriptions of humans, the complexities of contemporary life, and the contradictions that beset his existence. He published more than forty novels, along with several poetry duets, plays, and prose books. Paan - Knut Hamsun
