In this novel called after the name of the café "Qashamar" in Al-Abbasiya, Naguib Mahfouz narrates about the relationship that gathered five friends from the neighborhood, two from Eastern Abbasiya where the wealthy of the past lived in the Saryat, and two from Western Abbasiya who are more modest, and the fifth is the narrator who represents Mahfouz in the opinion of many. Their class affiliations, financial situations, and ideological and political opinions vary, but they gather on the friendship that unites them and carries them through the waves of time. Through this extended relationship, Mahfouz monitors many of the transformations witnessed by Egyptian society during a period extending from World War I until the time of Sadat.
