The Jurisprudential Rules and Their Applications in the Shafi'i School of Thought The book "Jurisprudential Rules and Their Applications" addresses the individual jurisprudential rules that appeared in the writings of the Imams of the Shafi'i school, with explanations, clarifications of their legal evidence, their meanings, and presents the most important jurisprudential branches and practical issues that fall under them. It also includes studies on the importance of jurisprudential rules and the extent of reliance on them in deduction. Recently, there has been an active movement of indexing and foundational studies in the science of Usul al-Fiqh and its rules, where many researchers have moved toward comprehensive statistical work on the rules of Usul al-Fiqh, including editing the texts of the rules, various expressions of the rule, their evidences, and their applications in jurisprudence, with modern examples. It also mentions the jurisprudential exceptions for each rule across different schools, relying on books dedicated to rules, analogies, and traditional parables, then the main books of jurisprudence in the schools. This book was written to address these issues specifically in the Shafi'i jurisprudence. Dr. "Mohammad Al-Zuhaili" first explained the Shafi'i jurisprudential rule, then listed other expressions for it if they exist. If the phrase matches in presenting the rule, the goal is achieved. Then, he clarifies the meaning of the rule, explains its intended purpose, and defines the general and common meaning of its words, along with evidence and the basis of the rule. He also mentions all examples cited in one, two, or three books, along with the confirmed exceptions, and provides the reference for each branch, issue, or example from the source he took it from, including references for the rule from other books and sources, as well as sources of jurisprudential explanation, application, and exceptions, to assist the reader and student of the school and its details. The author found that most of the Shafi'i-specific rules are concentrated in acts of worship, some in other branches of jurisprudence, and some differ in applications and branches within the Shafi'i school itself, which he explained in detail in his study. He also documented the benefits and warnings mentioned at the end of each rule related to it, highlighting their importance, usefulness, and the knowledge contained therein. He added side headings for many of the warnings and benefits that came after the rules, so the reader can understand the content of the warning from its heading. The author observed that many of the general rules in the Shafi'i school agree with the general rules in the Hanafi and Maliki schools, as stated by Ibn Nujaym in his book "Al-Ashbah wa Al-Nazair." He dedicated extensive explanations to clarify their specific character in the Shafi'i school, as Shafi'i scholars have explicitly mentioned and relied upon them in many of their books, considering them foundational to the school. This study is an expanded summary—rich in explanation, detail, and examples—of a previous study by the same author titled "Jurisprudential Rules and Their Applications in the Four Schools," in which he discussed the fundamental rules that gather jurisprudential differences among the four schools, with comparisons between them.
