The Explanation of Al-Tayyiba Al-Nashr in the Ten Readings
Imam Shihab al-Din ibn al-Jazari, son of al-Nadhm
Indeed, Allah, the Most Generous, bestowed His blessings upon His creation and sent down to them a guiding book. Whoever adheres to it is truthful, and whoever works by it is rewarded, and whoever makes it his guide will be led to Paradise, and whoever makes it his behind will be driven to Hell.
This book is protected from falsehood coming to it from before or behind. Allah, the Most High, has chosen to preserve it, as He said:
"Indeed, it is We who have sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardians."
Since the revelation of the divine message until our present era, the nation has not neglected to learn this book. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught the companions, and after him, the companions taught the Quran. They dispersed across the cities and many learned from them, with various dialects and languages.
Everyone recited what they learned and received until the first hundred years after the Hijra, when some imams took on the task of regulating the narrations of the readings. Many writings appeared over the centuries, up to the era of the Imam of the Most Knowledgeable, Muhammad ibn al-Jazari, may Allah have mercy on him.
He authored a great book on the ten readings, in which he compiled the ten imams: Nafi’, Ibn Kathir, Abu ‘Amr, Ibn ‘Amir, ‘Asim, Hamza, al-Kisai, Abu Jafar, Ya’qub, and Khalaf, with his own narration.
He named it "Kitab al-Nashr fi al-Qira’at al-‘Ashr" (The Book of the Spread in the Ten Readings). In it, he gathered nearly a thousand routes. Then he composed his famous poem, "Al-Tayyiba al-Nashr fi al-Qira’at al-‘Ashr," which Muslims in the Islamic lands continue to honor by memorizing its verses and studying their meanings.
Imam Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn al-Nadhm, a student of Ibn al-Jazri who explained it in a simple, accessible way, away from complexities, took special care to mention the reading and attribute it to its narrator, along with its explanation and some interpretations of the vocabulary.
Due to the importance of this explanation for the reader, we present it with some notes in the margin that include comments of interest and those mentioned by the editors.
We numbered the verses sequentially on the left side of each line, placed the letter [ص] on the right, and the letter [ش] at the beginning of the explanation of each verse.
