In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Introduction
Indeed, all praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and from our bad deeds. Whomever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him, and whomever He misguides, there is none to guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
As for what follows:
Among the noblest scholarly and practical stations is the engagement in achieving knowledge of Allah the Most High, His names and attributes, calling upon Him by them, acting according to their implications, and that is the true servitude; for knowing that is the foundation of religion, the essence of the call of the messengers, and the most obligatory and best of what minds comprehend and hearts acquire. Allah the Most High said: "To Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave those who deviate in His names. They will be recompensed for what they used to do." [Al-A'raf: 180].
There is no doubt that this knowledge is the noblest of the doors of knowledge contained in the Noble Qur'an, the most wise of the decisive matters, and the clearest of the evidences, due to the intense need for it and the fact that worship depends upon it. Allah the Most High did not leave it ambiguous but clarified it with utmost clarity, just as His Prophet (peace be upon him) paid full attention to it and explained it with a comprehensive clarification, for it is the pillar of religion—statement, action, and belief.
The scholars of the religion have long and recently taken care to categorize this subject, include it in their books, establish rules for it, and derive principles from the Book and Sunnah. They formulated these principles with sound, precise sentences called the rules of names and attributes, to serve as a safeguard for the seeker of truth and a reference point in case of doubt.
From a technical perspective, I have seen fit to adopt a new approach and to follow a unique method in regulating this subject—by taking the Qur'anic verses themselves as foundational principles, under which the scholars' statements are classified and from which their divisions branch out. These serve as the basis for establishing and teaching, so that they readily come to mind upon reflection and are clearly evident when debating opponents. For indeed, the text has authority over the necks, and minds submit to it, and falsehood cannot stand in its path.
When the river of Allah flows, the river of Makkah is drowned.
