Al-Umda fi al-Ahkam is one of the most beneficial and most valuable books of jurisprudence for the student of knowledge, and it is the most authentic as its author selected it from the hadiths of the two Sahihs. Whoever wants to stick to the Sahih, let him follow Al-Umda. However, it does not suffice without other books of jurisprudence that are more comprehensive than Al-Umda, such as Al-Muharrar and Al-Bulugh, and more comprehensive than both is Al-Muntaqa by Al-Mujad Ibn Taymiyyah.
So, every hadith in Al-Umda is authentic, and the student of knowledge should be keen on it. In Al-Bulugh, there are hadiths not found in Al-Umda that the student needs. In Al-Muharrar, there are rulings, notes on the hadiths, and clarifications of some weaknesses not found in Al-Bulugh.
If the student of knowledge wishes to compile these books into one compilation and mention the additions of each over the other, through this effort, these benefits are established.
Among the greatest commentaries on Al-Umda are the explanation by Ibn Daqiq Al-Id (Ihkam Al-Ahkam) and by Ibn Al-Mulqin (Al-Ilam bi Fawa'id Al-Umda). It is a good book. Among other beneficial explanations are (Taysir Al-‘Alam wa Fi Mawarid Al-Afham min Salasabil Al-Umda) and (Kashf Al-Litham fi Sharh ‘Umda Al-Ahkam). These are among the most valuable explanations. Its printing was delayed due to a slight deficiency in its early editions, but it was later printed after correcting this deficiency.
There are more than ten commentaries on Al-Umda, but the most valuable and best for the qualified student of knowledge are the explanation of Ibn Daqiq Al-Id, which is challenging and complex in its wording and sources, and the explanation of Ibn Al-Mulqin, which is longer but easier than Ibn Daqiq Al-Id’s. The marginal notes of Al-San‘ani on Ibn Daqiq Al-Id’s explanation are very beneficial and resolve many issues. The student of knowledge should pay attention to both.
The explanation of Sheikh Ibn Bassem is moderate and easy, understandable by ordinary learners.
