Introduction
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
All praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and from our bad deeds. Whomever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him, and whomever He misguides, there is none to guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Allah, the Exalted, says in His decisive Book: "O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims." [Al-Imran: 102].
And He, the Almighty, says: "O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul and created from it its mate, and dispersed from both many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever over you an Observer." [An-Nisa: 1].
He also says: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will then amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment." [Al-Ahzab: 70-71].
And after:
We present to our noble and esteemed readers this valuable and blessed advice from our virtuous Sheikh and teacher, Sheikh Abdullah Muhammad Al-Ghaniman, Professor of Higher Studies at the Islamic University in Medina — may Allah preserve it, and send His peace and blessings upon it — on a matter that concerns every Muslim, especially every student of knowledge. It is about the passions, disputes, and disagreements that occur from time to time among groups of Muslims, and the resulting injustice, oppression, and prejudice from some who claim knowledge.
This topic originally was a lecture delivered by Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ghaniman titled: "Passions and Their Effect on Disagreement."
He addressed these issues and their details with a sound, methodical scientific approach that combined authenticity in gathering texts and sayings, with seriousness and objectivity in presenting the issues in a clear style, smooth flow, and with the spirit of a sincere, compassionate scholar. He followed the approach of the righteous predecessors in presentation, evidence, and discussion, avoiding affectation, complexity, and ambiguity, which many modern Islamic writers tend to fall into.
I advise every student of knowledge and especially those engaged in الدعوة (call to Islam) to read this book carefully and thoughtfully, for they will find in it what they seek, God willing.
May Allah grant everyone success and guidance, and reward our Sheikh with the best of rewards, and do good for him in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet and beloved Muhammad, his family, companions, and followers.
