Authored by Dr. Muhammad Saleh Al-Barrak Introduction: Part on the Names of the Surahs of the Noble Quran In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful Praise be to Allah, who favored His speech over all other speech, and revealed His Book to the best of creation, making it contain news and rulings, chapters and parts, and surahs and verses, each surah distinguished by a name that sets it apart from others and identifies it for those who recite it. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, the chosen one, and His Prophet, the best of those He selected. May Allah send peace and blessings upon him, his noble family, his companions, and those who follow them with goodness, and grant them abundant peace until the Day of Resurrection and recompense. To proceed: Indeed, Allah—Glorified and Exalted—revealed this Quran to His Prophet and Messenger Muhammad, and distinguished his nation from all other nations. He made it superior to all other books. It was revealed in stages over twenty-three years, according to events and what benefits the servants, until Allah completed the Shariah and perfected the religion. From it, full verses and surahs were revealed until their total number reached fourteen hundred and thirteen surahs. Each surah is distinguished by a name that identifies it. Some surahs have multiple names; therefore, I was eager to compile what I could of the names of the surahs, whether they have one or more names, in a modest and elegant part. To my knowledge, no one has gathered them in a book—neither among the early nor the later scholars—except for scattered sections and discussions in the sciences of the Quran. I organized this part into four sections, and I concluded it with indexes: First section: The disagreement over the naming of the surahs—Is it based on divine revelation or personal effort? Second section: Surahs that have more than one name. Third section: Surahs that have only one intended name. Fourth section: Surahs that share the same name. Indexes include the following: - Index of Quranic verses - Index of Prophetic sayings - Index of references - Index of topics What is correct and true is from Allah alone, as a favor and grace from Him. What is mistaken or wrong is from my own soul, which commands evil, and from Satan, the accursed. May Allah protect us and our Muslim brothers from his plots and armies. I ask Allah to make this work purely for His face, to continue in His pleasure. Indeed, He is the Generous, Merciful, and Beneficent. He is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs. There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.
