Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate Introduction Praise be to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and from our bad deeds. Whomever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him; and whomever He misguides, there is none to guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. May Allah send blessings and peace upon him, his family, and his companions, and grant them abundant peace. As for what follows: Allah - the Most High - sent Muhammad with guidance and the religion of truth as mercy for the worlds, a role model for the righteous, and a proof against all creation. He fulfilled the trust, conveyed the message, advised the nation, and clarified to people what they need in the fundamentals and branches of their religion. He did not leave any good except he explained it and urged it, nor any evil except he warned the nation against it. He left his nation on the clear white path, its night like its day. His companions followed it illuminated and bright, and they received it from the best generations. Yet, the skies became darkened with various innovations that the innovators and their followers attempted to introduce into Islam, causing confusion and chaos. They built their beliefs on the weaving of spiders’ webs, while Allah - the Most High - protects His religion through His righteous servants, who have been granted faith, knowledge, and wisdom to repel these enemies and thwart their schemes. No innovation has arisen except that Allah - the Praise be to Him - has appointed from among the people of Sunnah those who refute and nullify it. Among the foremost of those who stood against these innovators was Sheikh al-Islam Taqi al-Din Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim ibn Abd al-Salam ibn Taymiyyah al-Harani, then the Damascene, born in Harran on Monday, the tenth of Rabi’ al-Awwal, in the year 661 AH, and who died while unjustly imprisoned in the Citadel of Damascus in Dhu al-Qa'dah, in the year 728 AH. May Allah have mercy on him. He authored many works clarifying the Sunnah, strengthening its foundations, and demolishing innovations. Among his writings is the treatise "Fath al-Rabb al-Bari bi-Talkhis al-Hamawiyyah," which he wrote in response to a question he received in the year 698 AH from Hama, a city in Sham, asking about what the jurists and imams of religion say regarding the verses of attributes and their hadiths. He answered with a response spanning about 83 pages, which brought him hardship and suffering. May Allah reward him best for Islam and the Muslims. Since understanding this answer and grasping its meaning can be difficult for many readers, I have summarized the important parts with additions where needed, and I named it "Fath al-Rabb al-Bari bi-Talkhis al-Hamawiyyah." I first printed it in the year 1380 AH, and now I am reprinting it for the second time, perhaps changing what I see as beneficial by adding or deleting. I ask Allah to make our work sincere for His face and beneficial to His servants. Indeed, He is Generous and Merciful. The author (1) It was later printed multiple times, by Allah’s grace and success.
