Publisher’s introduction: Jurisprudence
This book, as its name indicates, is ‘Umdat (the main reference), and for the student of knowledge, it is the best preparation. Jurisprudence in religion is among the most important obligations, and there is no harm in dedicating oneself entirely to learning it. And from Allah’s grace upon this nation: He provided it with men of precise understanding, who carried on their shoulders the inheritance of the Master of the Prophets, peace be upon him, and transmitted to us the fruits of the efforts of jurists—what they favored, verified, and scrutinized.
They authored summaries and concise texts, and wrote explanations and footnotes across various sciences. Among these distinguished imams is the fundamentalist jurist, Imam: Shihab al-Din Ibn al-Naqeeb al-Masri al-Shafi’i, who was distinguished by the quality of his writings; his book “Nukat al-Tanbih” and “Tashih al-Mahdhab” are among the most beneficial books.
As for our book, “Umdat al-Salik,” it reached the highest pinnacle in the hearts of scholars and gained precedence over others; it was received with acceptance, and they recommended studying and teaching it. It is, in brief, comprehensive of all chapters of jurisprudence, easy to handle, and highly beneficial. The author committed to verification according to the method of the later scholars, as he indicated in his introduction, clarifying his approach and adhering to it. This led scholars to favor his book, adopt it, and recommend it.
What distinguishes our edition is that it was compared with fourteen manuscript copies from Hadramout, Egypt, and the Levant, and we endeavored to correct the typographical errors that affected previous editions of the book. We completed what was lacking in this edition, and for the first time in all circulated editions of this book, it was missing in: (Chapter of Reconciliation), (Chapter of Acknowledgment), (Chapter of Reviving the Dead Land).
We benefited from the explanations of the book by the scholars Al-Jufri and Al-Jughri, may Allah have mercy on them. Since there were several issues not relied upon, as Sheikh Taha Hamadi pointed out in his book “Al-Faraj Ba’d al-Shiddah fi al-Masail al-Ghair Mu’atamadah fi Matn al-‘Umdat,” we contacted him and obtained clarification on other issues, as well as what we found in the two explanations mentioned. Thus, we compiled a collection of issues, clarified them, and documented the relied-upon opinions.
