The book of Sibawayh 1/5 volume, published by the International Al-Risala Foundation
Author: Abu Bishr Amr ibn Othman Qanbar / Sibawayh
Researcher: Professor Dr. Muhammad Kazem Al-Bukaia
It is considered the first grammatical book that reached us, and this is certain, as it is a comprehensive book on the sciences of language and grammar. The book is characterized by citing the Holy Quran, Hadith, Arab poetry, proverbs, and the speech of eloquent Arabs, to serve as evidence and establish the correct proof for each issue.
The book is one of the most important works of the Basra linguist Sibawayh and is considered the first systematic book that organizes and documents the rules of the Arabic language. The book was written in the second century AH. It was called the "Book" because its author left it without a title; historically, it is certain that Sibawayh did not name it with a specific name.
Al-Jahiz said about it: "People have not written a book in grammar like it, and all other books are dependent on it."
Al-Sirafi said: "The book of Sibawayh is famous and esteemed among grammarians, so it was said in Basra: 'So-and-so read the book,' meaning it is Sibawayh's book."
Al-Jarmi said: "I have been advising people in jurisprudence for thirty years from the book of Sibawayh."
Abu Ishaq Al-Zujaj said: "When I examine the examples from the book of Sibawayh, I realize that he is the most knowledgeable person about the language."
Imam Al-Dhahabi said: "Imam of grammar, the proof of the Arabs, Persian then Basra. He studied jurisprudence and Hadith for a period, then turned to Arabic and excelled, leading the scholars of his time, and authored his great book, which no one has surpassed."
Imam Ibn Kathir said: "He authored a book on grammar whose excellence cannot be matched, and subsequent grammarians explained it, immersing themselves in its depths and extracting its pearls, but none reached its depths."
The book contains chapters divided into four parts. The author began with a chapter on the science of speech in Arabic, and concluded with a chapter on the case of the genitive. The book includes 1,050 lines of poetry.
In it, Muhammad ibn Yazid said: "No book has been written in any science like Sibawayh's book; because the books classified in sciences are dependent on others, but Sibawayh's book, if understood, does not need anything else."
