To the front of Imam Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, prepared it and arranged it: Dr. Hesham bin Muhammad Al Bargash
Introduction
Praise be to Allah, who favored the righteous with His remembrance and obedience, so they grazed in the gardens of Paradise for their preoccupation with His مراقبة (watchfulness) and worship.
And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner in His lordship, divinity, names, and attributes.
And I bear witness that our master Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, His chosen one among His creation, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, his family, his companions, and his followers: the people of his religion and his guardians, and may peace and blessings be upon them all.
As for what follows:
The book "Riyad As-Salihin" by Imam Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, is among the most beneficial concise books; it contains authentic hadiths and noble verses that encourage walking the paths leading to Paradise, through righteous deeds, inner and outer manners, and all kinds of etiquette for the travelers, combining encouragement and warning; from hadiths of asceticism, soul exercises, moral refinement, purification of hearts and their treatment, safeguarding limbs, and removing their flaws.
All of this is in addition to the distinguished features of the book, such as good selection, quality choice, beautiful arrangement, excellent translations, and precise understanding.
And because seeing is not like hearing, I personally perceived during my work on this blessed book all these great meanings. Moreover, I say: this book is distinguished by a unique feature; it transports its reader to experience the atmosphere of the era of the message and the details of the daily life of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in his home with his children, wives, and with the young and old, the ignorant and the knowledgeable, friends and enemies, believers and disbelievers, servants and the nation, slaves and masters, in his call, jihad, his halting and traveling, in his sadness and laughter, in his satisfaction and anger, in his health and illness, and all his noble states, including a practical application of describing Allah, the Almighty, to him, by His saying: "And indeed, you are of a great moral character" [Qalam: 4].
The book takes its reader from the world of the unseen to the world of witness, and it tours him from the narrowness of this world to the vastness of this world and the Hereafter, so the reader lives with it the atmosphere of worldly life with its brevity, rapid change, and vanity, and the life of the Hereafter with its eternity and permanence, and what it contains of everlasting bliss or painful punishment.
It also provides an accurate picture of the minutiae of the daily lives, feelings, and conditions of the companions, their asceticism, their preference for what is with Allah, their jihad, and their sacrifices despite their limited means, and their love that surpasses description for their Messenger, prioritizing their love for him over their own selves, their families, and all people, and their dedication to serving and supporting him with all that is precious.
No doubt, the scholars' advice was great regarding this, and they paid attention to explaining, teaching, and commenting on it. It became a core for the wise, and the nation received it with acceptance and respect. Allah decreed its widespread, so that hardly any house or library is without it. Perhaps this is because Allah knew the sincerity of its author, his good intention, and his great advice.
Why this footnote?
Because the urgent need was for more facilitation and closeness to what the book "Riyad As-Salihin" contains of treasures and the manifestation of the most beneficial aspects derived from its hadiths in various areas: faith, creed, morals, manners, upbringing, and social matters.
So that the general public and specialists, young and old, women and men, can benefit—this footnote, which I named: "Benefits on Riyad As-Salihin."
I aimed through it to honor myself by joining this noble march and this blessed group, who have served and cared for this book. I ask the Glorious and Generous to mend our brokenness, have mercy on our weakness, forgive our slips, and overlook our faults.
Methodology in working on the book:
A- I relied on the version of Riyad As-Salihin, edited by Dr. Maher Al-Fahl, as the original, and I benefited from the edition of Dar Al-Minhaj, which relied on two manuscripts compared to the copy of Ibn Al-Attar, a student of Imam Nawawi, and read on him. Also, from the edition of Dar Ibn Al-Jawzi, edited by Sheikh Ali Al-Halabi. When there is a significant difference in some words, I indicate that difference and its source in the footnotes.
B- I provided a brief explanation of the strange words in the hadiths—if any—at the bottom of each hadith, and distinguished them from the main text by placing them between parentheses under the title [Explanation of unfamiliar words:] like this.
C- I mentioned the most important benefits derived from each hadith; I distinguished them from the main text by placing them between parentheses: [And what is benefited from the hadith], based on referring to the explanations of scholars on the books of Sunnah, and through various commentaries on Riyad As-Salihin; among the most important are:
- "Guide of the Successful to the Methods of Riyad As-Salihin" by Ibn Al-Anan
- "Nuzhat Al-Mutaqeen: Explanation of Riyad As-Salihin" by Dr. Mustafa Al-Khan and others
- "Explanation of Riyad As-Salihin from the Words of the Master of Messengers" by Ibn Uthaymeen
- "Tarteez Riyad As-Salihin" by Faisal Al-Mubarak
- "Guide for Seekers to Riyad As-Salihin" by Dr. Farooq Hamada
- "Offering of the Lovers with the Arrangement of Riyad As-Salihin" by Dr. Muhammad Naeem
In addition to various commentaries on the hadiths, such as commentaries on Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and others from different Sunnah books.
I also benefited from some encyclopedic hadith collections available online, especially the site "Al-Durar As-Saniyyah."
