The measure of moderation in criticizing men is a book on al-jarh wa al-ta'dil written by the Hafiz Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Qaymaz Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi. It is a comprehensive book for criticizing narrators of hadith, containing biographies of the imams of news. Al-Dhahabi wrote it after his compilation of "Al-Mughni fi al-Du'afa" which relied on many references. In "Al-Mizan," he added men who were not mentioned in "Al-Mughni." The author mentions in the book: liars, the abandoned, the weak, the preservation-minded in their religion, those accepted in witnesses, the truthful or hidden ones who have leniency, the unknown, and the trustworthy who have been criticized by those who are not to be paid attention to. Al-Dhahabi said: "My book contains mention of liars and fabricators, then of truthful hadith scholars or hidden sheikhs who have leniency and did not reach the rank of meticulous reliable narrators, then many unknowns."
The books that al-Dhahabi referred to in his book "Al-Mizan" and from which he took the sequence of narrators include:
- "The Great Book of the Weak" by Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Musa ibn Hammad al-Aqili al-Makki (died 322 AH).
- "The Criticized from the Hadith Scholars" by Hafiz Muhammad ibn Hibban al-Basti (died 354 AH).
- "Al-Kamil fi Du'afa al-Rijal" by Imam Hafiz Abu Ahmad Abdullah ibn 'Adi al-Jurjani (died 365 AH).
- "Al-Du'afa" by Muhammad ibn al-Husayn Abu al-Fath al-Azdi (died 367 AH).

- "Al-Du'afa" by Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Ahmad al-Hakim (died 378 AH).
