The extension of the letter in rulings of Waqf
Introduction
Praise be to Allah who made the word of Tawhid a shield and fortress for His servants, and made the Sacred House a place of refuge and safety for people. And blessings and peace be upon Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy, the master of the nation, and upon his family and companions, the leaders of truth and the masters of creation, and those who follow their guidance and follow their Sunnah until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: Waqf is a fruit of the blessed fruits of Islam, and a manifestation of the ancient Islamic civilization. Al-Shafi’i, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "The people of Jahiliyyah did not restrict a house or land as a charity by restricting it; rather, the restriction was only by the people of Islam." (1)
And Waqf was further elevated when the Prophet, peace be upon him, emphasized its virtue, saying: "When a person dies, his deeds are cut off except from three things: a continuous charity (Waqf), or beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him." (2)
Imam Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, commented on this hadith: "The scholars said: The meaning of the hadith is that the deeds of the deceased cease with his death, and the reward for his deeds stops being renewed for him, except in these three things, because he was the cause of them: the child is from his earning, and likewise the knowledge he left behind from teaching or writing, and the ongoing charity, which is the Waqf."
