The Great Code
Imam Sanhouni's narration
This book (The Great Code) is considered one of the most important books among Maliki jurists, and it is regarded as a fundamental source of the school. It is the second main source of Maliki jurisprudence after Al-Muwatta, and all subsequent works of the school are dependent on it. It is relied upon for fatwas, rulings, and judicial matters, and most Maliki scholars accept what is recorded in The Great Code, considering it the most authentic narration and the highest level of hearing and narration. It takes precedence over other works of the school and is not replaced by anything else.
The Malikis have agreed to call it The Great Code, the Book, and the Mother, and when these names are found in Maliki books, they refer to The Great Code.
The Code consists of questions and answers about jurisprudential issues that were addressed to Imam Malik. It contains 6,200 questions arranged by chapters of jurisprudence, including Imam Malik's narration from the Companions and Tabi‘een. Therefore, it is considered the most authentic book of jurisprudential branches in Maliki fiqh narration.
