In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Praise be to God, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of God, and upon his family, companions, and those who follow him.
To proceed: The article _ or the essay _ is a great door of knowledge, and a broad path for spreading thought and influencing people. There is no doubt that the golden period for the article was in the first half of the fourteenth century until nearly the seventh decade of that century; when it flourished, and its market thrived in many Arab countries, especially in the Levant and Egypt. At that time, distinguished writers appeared, comparable to the early writers in their refined styles and high standards. During that period, newspapers and magazines were keen to attract top writers and scholars; thus, it became a wide field for publishing literature, science, critique, responses, and similar topics.
God facilitated for me the opportunity to review many of those articles, whether through the issues of those newspapers and magazines or through books that collected those articles. Despite the widespread publication of those articles and the fame of their authors at that time, it remains limited compared to their dissemination and ease of circulation in our current era. Furthermore, much of what was published then has been lost, studied, and is feared to be subject to oblivion and the ravages of disappearance; thus, this generation is deprived of a great blessing from that heritage and those experiences that elevate the reader’s ambition, improve his writing or rhetorical style, grant him experience and knowledge, save him much time and effort, and inform him of the extent of intellectual development during that period. It also limits him from extensive research into the topics discussed, which have been explored, researched, and responded to.
Some of those articles were printed poorly, without regard for punctuation rules, which may hinder understanding for many readers. Hence, the idea arose to compile some of those articles, select them, and prepare them for appropriate publication, hoping that they will achieve the aforementioned goals, provide the reader with a substantial share of knowledge and thought, open horizons of understanding and experience, introduce him to some of those lofty rhetorical styles, and acquaint him with writers from regions that did not receive enough study and research — some people might think they are devoid of thought and writing, while they have reached the peak of knowledge and style, as in Tunisia and Algeria, as will be evident from reading some of the writings of scholars and writers there.
God made it easy to produce the first and second collections of these articles, and this is the third collection of (Articles by Major Arab Writers in the Modern Era). It includes various sections and diverse topics: in science and الدعوة, in reform, in the fundamentals of happiness, in morals and التربية, in politics and society, in youth and women issues, in poetry and الأدب, in اللغة and methods of advancement in writing. It also contains articles on the Prophet’s biography, highlighting the virtues of Islam, and refuting criticisms raised against it.
The reader will find in it novelty of approach, depth, strength, some interesting topics, and rare methods. He will move from one elegant garden to another, and find various lofty styles; some inclined to grandeur and eloquence, others to ease and smoothness, and so on. The reader might think that reading just the titles of some articles suffices, and thus he might refrain from reading the rest.
As mentioned in the introduction of the first collection, the articles are discussed in terms of their concept, origin, history, and types. The introduction also discussed the reasons for publishing these articles, the goals aimed for, and the method followed by these collections. If one reads the articles, he might discover treasures of valuable knowledge, precise understanding, and beautiful presentation that he had not imagined. Many examples of this are present in the articles of this collection.
It is also clear to the discerning reader that these writings were created in a dark time; occupation was deeply rooted in many Muslim lands, communism was at its peak and shining, ignorance and psychological defeat were widespread. This calls for appreciation of what those writers did and excusing them for what they missed or fell short of, if anything. I have translated most of those writers’ works in the first collection. The articles in this collection are attributed to their sources, and references to their writing dates are provided if available. Some are short, others medium, and some are lengthy, almost like scientific research. I have kept those articles as they are, and perhaps I have omitted a few minor details that are dispensable, without harming the core of the topic, especially if they require discussion, might confuse some readers, or contain justifications for certain innovations, and so on. My goal was not to criticize the writers, but I try my best not to comment on any article with critique or objection unless necessary for clarification or removing confusion, which is very rare, so as not to interrupt the reader’s flow and enjoyment.
Most footnotes are the work of the writers themselves; what I add will be marked with the letter (M) to distinguish it from the original.
