The Prohibitions on Committing Major Sins by Imam Sihab al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad Muhammad al-Haythami
The Prohibitions on Committing Major Sins by Imam Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (d. 974 AH) is a book on purification and admonition, in which its author clarified the major sins and related rulings, deterrence, promise, and threat.
Imam Ibn Hajar al-Haytami said in the introduction of the book:
"For indeed, it was shining in my soul during the year three and thirty and nine hundred, a long period and many times, that I would compose a book explaining the major sins and what relates to them of rulings, deterrence, promise, and threat, and that I would extend in refining and clarifying and elucidating it at length, and that I would elaborate beneficially in its evidence, but I was presenting one foot and delaying the other because I did not have the materials for that in the mother of towns until I succeeded in obtaining a book attributed to the Imam of his era and the teacher of his time, the Hafiz Abu al-‘Abd Allah al-Dhahabi, but it did not suffice the beginners, nor did it enrich that goal, because he relied in it on a comfort that elevates his rank above such, and he brought in it hadiths and stories that he did not attribute each of them to its place with a lack of thoroughness in his pursuit of the speech of the imams in that and not interpreting it based on the speech of those who preceded him in those paths.
So that prompted me, along with the blatant increase of major sins and the lack of shame of most people from them inwardly and outwardly, because the children of the time and the brothers of amusement and forgetfulness have been overwhelmed by the calls of depravity and eternal dwelling in the land of desires and stubbornness, and reliance on the house of delusion and turning away from the house of eternity, and forgetting the consequences and neglecting the faults until they felt safe from Allah’s punishment and His cunning.
And they did not know that that delay is only for His domination to be fulfilled upon them, until I start in composing what I intended and which guarantees clarifying everything I have presented. And if Allah wills, in this chapter I will be a deterrent, i.e., a deterrent, and a preacher and a commanding, i.e., a preacher and a commander.
Therefore, I named it: The Prohibitions on Committing Major Sins. And I hope, if it is completed as I mentioned, that Allah will benefit the beginner and the advanced, and that He will make it a means for purifying the inward and outward. So He is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs. And to Him I turn in much and little.
And my success is only by Allah. Upon Him I rely, and to Him I turn. Allah is sufficient for me, there is no deity but Him. Upon Him I rely, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne. Whatever Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah.
