General overview
This book is a study and analysis of the comprehensive principle and the main axis in the fundamentalist thought at Imam Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, which is: clarity. And "how clarity" is the first title in the book "Al-Risala," and all the details mentioned therein and in "Al-Umm" are considered an application of Al-Shafi'i's definition of clarity, as he said: "Clarity: a comprehensive name for meanings gathered in principles, branching into branches. The least of those gathered and branching meanings is clarity for whom it is addressed, from those for whom the Quran was revealed in their language, and they are close in understanding, even if some of them are more emphasized in clarity than others, and different for those who are ignorant of the Arabic language."
And the Al-Shafi'i foundational system is an explanation of the attribute of clarity of the Quran—which is the starting point and the core of clarity—and the clarification of the Sunnah, and how to extract understanding/fiqh from the precise interaction between them.
And the tool used to derive this clarity: the Arabic language.
As for clarity through ijtihad according to Al-Shafi'i, it refers back to the Quran and Sunnah, and other evidences and rules are only auxiliary tools.
Thus, the core of the fundamentalist understanding at Al-Shafi'i revolves around the text and deduction based on it.
Therefore, clarity at Imam Al-Shafi'i revolves around three pillars: clarity through the Quran, clarity through the Sunnah, and clarity through ijtihad.
And based on these three pillars, this book was built.
