For Imam Abi Jafar Ibn Al-Zubayr Al-Tukhi Al-Gharnaṭi Verification and commentary: Professor Dr. Abdulhamid Hindawi Introduction: Praise be to Allah who revealed the Book upon His servant and did not make in it any crookedness, and I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, the best of people in guidance. And after: The issue of similarity in the Noble Qur'an is among the issues that have stirred much debate in the past and present; as it has been relied upon by the malicious and those who attack the Qur'an to stir doubts and suspicions among the general public and those ignorant of the arts of eloquence and expression. But from the wisdom of Allah Almighty is that this similarity in His Book’s verses is among the strongest reasons that lead to recognizing His inimitability and great eloquence; for no one who doubts the Book of Allah—whether out of ignorance or knowledge—except that the specialists in studying the Book of Allah stand up to examine it, uncover its secrets of eloquence and clarity, and refute the doubts of these poor ones whose arrows turn back upon them, those who (want to extinguish Allah’s light with their mouths, and Allah refuses except to perfect His light, even if the disbelievers dislike) [At-Tawbah]. Every doubt directed at the Book reveals aspects of good expression veiled, and verses of eloquence hidden; had it not been for the attack of the doubters and the cunning of the envious, hands would not have extended to uncover its veil and remove its cover. This great book has clarified many aspects of beauty in the verses of the ambiguous parts of the Book, refuting the false doubts brought by the people of deviation, and correcting the slips of the scholars. The book of the essence of interpretation is one of the best, longest, and most magnificent works on the ambiguous Qur'an; its author is characterized by patience, abundant knowledge, strong persuasion, and beautiful style, mostly in his book. Moreover, he is a Sunni scholar with correct creed, extensive knowledge, strong resolve in defending religion, and rebutting the doubts of deviants and atheists. He composed his book specifically for this purpose, stating in its introduction: "And what prompted me to this purpose and added to it, for those who are eager and passionate about considering and contemplating its astonishing miracles and secrets, is like my own situation in the firm grasp of my attraction and my effort in the obligatory, that it is a door that no one before me or after me has opened, nor anyone who followed their path, in what I have known through successive ages and endless days, with its great position, lofty place, and significant importance in religion, and the support of those with doubts and suspicions among the doubters and atheists. I have read this book, verified it, and commented on what appeared to me of its issues and problems, as part of our plan to produce a comprehensive encyclopedia of the most important books in this field—namely, the science of the ambiguous Qur'an. Since this book is among the most significant and highest in status and stature, it was necessary to include it in this blessed encyclopedia. And praise be to Allah, we have exerted effort in correcting its text, deriving its evidences from the Qur'an, Sunnah, poetry, and translation of those scholars and eminent figures mentioned within, comparing its text with printed and handwritten copies available to us, indexing its topics and issues, commenting on its problematic parts, and explaining its obscure points. I have come across two good handwritten copies of the book at the Institute for the Revival of Manuscripts, which I have designated as (A) for the first and (B) for the second. I also found a good verified edition (1) of the book, edited by Saeed Al-Falah, may Allah reward him well for us and for Muslims—he relied on two other handwritten copies from which we benefited in some parts and indicated so. We designated his copy with the symbol (G), referring to Dar Al-Gharb Al-Islami, which published the book. We also referred to another edition by Dar Al-Kutub Al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, which we found did not add anything to Saeed Al-Falah’s edition, and in fact contained all the errors present in Al-Falah’s edition, with additional mistakes. We marked it with (K), and also pointed out errors in the verification in relevant parts of the text. Before publishing the book, I reviewed another verified edition published by Dar Al-Nahda Al-Arabiya, Beirut, edited by Dr. Mahmoud Kamel, which included useful additions based on other handwritten copies of the book, from which we also benefited in correcting some parts in the final comparison, although it also contained flaws, and there was not enough time to point them out as the book was in its final review. I ask Allah to accept this work for His sake, to grant us abundant reward in this world and the Hereafter, and to reward everyone who contributed to this book with effort, whether through research, review, or comparison, especially the dear son Abdulrahman Hindawi—an assistant at the College of Dar Al-Ulum, Cairo University—who helped with tangible effort in comparing his experiences, correcting them according to the principles of the book, deriving its evidences, and translating its scholars. O Allah, reward him and everyone who helped in this with a good reward, whether little or much, and grant us abundant reward in this world and the Hereafter, and make it beneficial for Your servants, revealing the inimitability of Your Book. Indeed, You are the Most Holy, the Capable. And written by Dr. Abdulhamid Hindawi. May Allah forgive him, his parents, and the Muslims.
