Reviving the Sciences of Religion by Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali, may Allah have mercy on him (505 AH). A comprehensive book on education, morals, Sufism, jurisprudence, and creed. Its author organized it into four sections, with an introduction on knowledge.
In the first quarter, it covers rulings of worship and reveals their secrets, mentioning their manners, Sunnahs, and encouragement towards them. The second quarter is dedicated to customs such as marriage, eating, earning, lawful and unlawful, companionship, solitude, social dealings, travel, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and it explains the secrets of transactions among people.
The third quarter is devoted to destructive matters such as the wonders of the heart, spiritual exercises, the harms of lust of the stomach and private parts, the harms of the tongue, etc. The fourth quarter explains the means of salvation, such as repentance, patience, fear of Allah, hope, poverty, asceticism, love, sincerity, etc.
The book is not without notes: Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Reviving the Sciences" contains many benefits, but it also contains blameworthy material, as it includes corrupt ideas from philosophers related to monotheism, prophecy, and the hereafter. When it mentions the knowledge of Sufis, it is like taking an enemy of Muslims and dressing him in Muslims' clothes. The imams of religion criticized Abu Hamid in his books, saying: his illness is "Al-Shifa," meaning "Al-Shifa of Ibn Sina" in philosophy.
Despite that, it contains words from upright Sufi sheikhs, knowledgeable in the acts of the heart, in agreement with the Book. The author filled the book with fabricated and weak, feeble hadiths, which are explained in a splendid, verified, and published edition in six volumes, along with "Al-Mughni an Haml al-Asfar fi Takhrij ma fi al-Ihya min al-Akhbar" by Hafiz Zain al-Din al-Iraqi (806 AH), "Takhreejat Imam al-Zabidi (1205 AH) in 'Ittihaf al-Sadah al-Muttaqin'," "Takhreejat Imam ibn al-Sabki (771 AH) in 'Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyyah al-Kubra'," and his annotation "Al-Imla' ala Mushkil al-Ihya" by Imam Al-Ghazali.
